Corresponding Work Literary works consist of short stories, poems, and any form of fiction or nonfunctional writing that is a paragraph form. A poem is a verbal composition designed to convey experiences, ideas, or emotions in vivid and imagination way, characterized by the use of language chosen for its sound and suggestive power and by the use of literary techniques such as meter, metaphor, and rhyme. There are also poems that have a tragedy, drama, and love meaning behind them.
A short story s like an invented prose narrative shorter than a novel usually dealing with a few characters and aiming at unity of effect and often concentrating on the creation of mood rather than a plot. A short story also a work of prose fiction that is shorter than a novel. This paper will recognize the two literary works that will be compare and contrast in a poem. The first poem I choose for a literary work is “How Do I Love Thee” by Elizabeth Barrett Browning is a sonnet. A sonnet is a highly structured form of poetry.
There are two different kinds of sonnets, the Italian sonnet and the English sonnet (Glutton, 2010). Borrowing poem is an Italian sonnet. This poem is also written in an iambic pentameter rhythm pattern. An iambic pentameter is a line with ten syllables, with an emphasized syllable being followed by an emphasized one (Glutton, 2010). This writing style by Elizabeth Barrett Browning made this poem very easy to read and understand. I believe the way Browning wrote this poem made it relatable to many people, and makes it still relatable today.
The depth of her love is so evident in the way she writes this and people always relate to love. Second poem I choose for a literary work is, “My Last Duchess Ferreira” by Robert Browning (1842). I chose this poem because the author Robert uses dramatic monologue. In a “dramatic monologue, only one person’s contribution to the conversation is reveled” (1 1. 7 Glutton, 2010). The main character Duke is the only part of the conversation reveled. The dramatic monologue could match anyone lifestyle.
This paper will also recognize the literary elements of the poems and short story from tone, style, content, etc. The major element of drama that distinguishes it from short stories or poetry is its ability to use an actual visual performance to draw you in. Drama is a mimetic art. That meaner it seeks to imitate life, to create human experiences as they ordinarily occur” (Glutton, 2010). Dramas are written with the intent of being performed for an audience. Sound is a good literary element of a poem, sound is one of the most important poems does have sound. That does not Just mean rhyme.
It meaner many other things, The earliest poems were memorized and recited, not written down, so sound to know who and how to speak a poem, and so the audiences will be able to understand you. Therefore, stanzas are used for how many lines are grouped in an element of poetry. Furthermore, rhythm is more of the how many beats or meters does the poem have in elements of poetry. Lastly, figures of speech and form are the last two of elements of poetry to where figure of speech has many poems are full of metaphors and other figurative language, while form has standard types in a poem. There are five elements that go into a great short story.
Character is a person, or sometimes even an animal, who takes part in the action of a short story or other literary work. After that, the setting of a short story is the time and place in which it appends in the story has a important part as an element of a short story. Theme is another element that is a central idea or belief in a short story. Lastly, you have plot and conflict in the short story as an element, which a plot is more like a series of events and character of actions that are related to the central conflict. And conflict is like a struggle between two people or things in a short story.
The difference between the compare and contrast in the two literary works would generally speaks that “tone” is the feeling or atmosphere the author would have to neat to set, while “mood” is the feeling or atmosphere perceived by the reader. Tone can also have the writer’s attitude toward the audience; a writer’s tone can be serious, sarcastic, solemn, objective, satirical, solemn, wicked, etc. Tone is the author’s (not necessarily your narrator’s) overall outlook or attitude toward the given audience. Although, mood is the feeling a piece of literature arouses in the reader: happy, sad, peaceful, etc.
Mood is the overall feeling of the piece, or passage. Mood can also have a state of mind and an emotional-intellectual attitude toward the subject by hosing certain words rather than others and by weaving their connotations together, an author can give whole settings and scenes a kind of personality, or mood. In a short story you can see the contrast in “The Story of an Hour” and “The Welcome Table. ” Earlier in the paper it shows the meaning for tone and mood. And in the short stories you can see that the author has shown their feelings in both of the stories.
In the short story “The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin is a good piece of literature that can explores the theme of freedom. It has a successful depicts off Oman in oppressed marriage to a woman about a new lifestyle of freedom and happiness by showing her emotions as she progressively starts to accept things she has been going through since her husband’s death. The narrator explains how the couple was married for a long time and the love they shared for each other were surrounded by happiness of freedom, but it is only understood at the end of the story.
Mrs.. Mallard was afflicted with a heart trouble; great care was taken to break her as gently as possible for the news of her husband’s death. As the story goes on you can see the literary works tone and mood in the Tory. Mrs.. Mallard mood in the story was loving and caring; her tone in the story was a positive attitude in the whole story, because she was going through the death of her husband. She had to stay calm because she had a bad heart. Open window, a comfortable, roomy armchair into this she sank” (Chopin, 1851-1904).
That was a sign of symbol of security and comfort towards her husband’s death, when the window opens from God. But she ends up dying from Joy that kills her, because she was able to keep a positive attitude while her husband walked in after she was told he was killed. It was her sister Josephine who told her, in broken sentences; veiled hints that revealed in half concealing. Her husband’s friend Richards was there, too, near her. It was he who had been in the newspaper office when intelligence of the railroad disaster was received, with Brenner Mallard’s name leading the list of “killed. He had only taken the time to assure himself of its truth by a second telegram, and had hastened to forestall any less careful, less tender friend in bearing the sad message. In the story “The Welcome Table” by Alice Walker, one of the black writers of the as to remain steadily productive for the two ensuring decades, the enormous success of sass’s “The Color Purple has generated critical interest in a literary career that has been, even if not widely noted, at the very least worthy of note.
As a poet and novelist Walker has always had a smaller but enthusiastic following, while her many essays, published in black and feminist oriented magazines, have likewise kept her name current, albeit in rather limited circles. Walker’s also written two collections of short stories sass’s ‘In Love ; Trouble ND sass’s You Can’t Keep a Good Woman Down. ” “The Welcome Table is Racism and Sexism which highlight the plight of black women in a minority society and how they are treated as inferior by the black men.
I was instantly connected to the story by its descriptive images and words throughout enabling you to vision the scene and feel that you were in it and imagining the story as you read it. The conclusion of the short story “The Story of an Hour” and “The Welcome Table,” although both are fiction, but “The Story of an Hour” tells a lot about a women’s life in the mid-sass. Back in those life women really had no say in things and were not allowed to work. Then the men was controlling of all the money so marriage was very common for women.
The Story of an Hour was a great story to show what women’s life would have been like in the mid-sass and we can learn from it, compared to the generation we are in now. Chopin illustrates how lifestyles can change and conceptions can be modified in a heartbeat. During the sass, Louis had a very hard time trying to be accepted into society’s standards. Symbolism and tone can directly affect how a reader interrupts the story’s theme. The tone had Just switched completely from a concerning kindness to a relieving happiness.
