School Safety Jake Christiansen Senior Committee Senior Project 13 December 2013 Over the years, the united States has encountered numerous amounts of schools shootings. With every attack that has occurred, how have we failed to stop them? In the future, parents of the students must allow them to enter schools and feel confident that they will be safe. We have the technology and time to emplace tactics that can prevent any type of school shooting, we just need to initiate them. Studying the past shootings and figuring out what went down and how to prevent it is the key.
Over the years, most schools in the united States have failed to install safety devices to protect students from harm. Even though, shootings still occur In schools that have well developed plans “If you build a no-foot fence” the expression goes. “someone Is going to find an II-foot ladder” (Kelly). However, even if a plan may not save every life, if it protects just one more, it has done its Job. That is why in order for schools to increase safety for students and teachers, they must study past events, develop a specific plan for safety and train responders and staff on what to do when school hooting occurs. ND train for the future. The most recognized school shooting In the last twenty years happened In columbine Colorado during the year of 1999. There were two shooters that day that killed thirteen people and themselves. This killing caused a national outbreak in school safety. One of the biggest topics that came up during the discussions was bullying and how future incidents can be avoided by tackling our counties bullying problems. (Cloud) Now they have found out that Eric Harris and Dylan Keyhole (the shooters) were never bullied.
In fact, they had diaries that contained Information bout placing on freshmen and “fag’s. ” Their shooting put schools all over the nation on alert. Reports showed that the two teenagers were never on antidepressant medication and didn’t target Socks, blacks, or Christians. They Just wanted to kill. Harris and Keyhole had a plan for that day that was way worse then what happened. In fact the two had set up bombs in the lunch room that would have collapsed the floor above. Thankfully the bombs didn’t go off, and they were so badly wired that their Ignition wasn’t even close.
What’s so different from other school shootings Is everyone, even friends. The fact that Harris carried out the attack when he did probably saved hundreds of lives, as it allowed for schools and safety organizations to begin devoting plans that would counter such attacks (Alias). A year ago Sandy Hook Elementary School, twenty students and six teachers were shot and killed. This created a new safety effort throughout school districts all around. President Obama called on administrators and law enforcement officials to look over and change what procedures are currently in place that obviously need to be changed.
School boards across the nation reacted with increased spending on security, with even stronger efforts at elementary schools. The idea of installing fences has become an idea that has gotten a lot of debate, for one reason and that is during the rampage at Sandy Hook, some students escaped out the fire exit doors and ran away. That saved their lives. With a fence in place, the students would be trapped in a prison like setting with a killer on the loose. During recent training, school safety officials told teachers and administrators that they, too, can leave if they feel that’s the safest option.
Furthermore, Sandy Hook caused an up rise in school security officers, funneling $4. Million into 1,000 new positions across the nation (Kelly). Yet, another recent school shooting happened in Colorado on December 13th. 2013. The senior shooter parked in the parking lot, and began to unload his equipment when members in the parking lot saw him with his weapons. Wearing a bandoleer containing shotgun shells, and carrying a pump-action shotgun, a machete and a backpack holding three Molotov cocktails, he walked through the doors and entered the school. The Sheriff on the scene stated, “He took no effort to conceal the fact that he was armed. It was over in only eighty seconds. He fired one shot down the hallway upon entering the school then entered the area were his target was located shot her point blank and head for the library. Once he entered the library seeing that the librarian wasn’t present he threw one Molotov at some bookshelves causing three shelves to burn to the ground, later going to the back of the room and taking his own life The rampage might have resulted in many more casualties had it not been for the quick response of the deputy sheriff who was working as a school resource officer at the school (Watkins).
This shooting came on the eve of the one year anniversary of the Sandy Hook massacre. The good news is that law enforcement officials are becoming quicker at preventing and responding to these incidents, the bad news is that there will be cases were they aren’t able to respond fast enough and then the school has to take on the role of protecting the students. With these past incidents, one thing could have stopped the shooting is a well- made plan that can extinguish or help prevent a problem.
When you look at a school and you’re in a school, one part that could be an easy fix could be added security to he windows. In Sandy Hook Elementary School, the killer shot out the glass and stepped right in. Schools can change the odds of children and staff being killed by adding a wire mesh in the windows or put a laminate film on the window. The numbers of children killed in the past because of unprotected windows is enormous compared to the numbers of people that are saved because of it. The glass and film adds a lot of resistance to any shooter.
The wire mesh holds them back and with the film they would not know what’s on the other side of the glass. My experiences at the the people that keep our county protected. From the time the Leland County Sheriff gets the call they can be at Northrop Public School within 20 minutes, With Sutton Bay and Leland being somewhere around 10 minutes. Besides the vast ideas of infrastructural plans for school safety, the N. R. A has their own ideas. What schools really need is a way to keep guns out of the hands of troubled students. For that, the N. R.
A has been recommending coordination with mental health professionals to identify students who might become threats (Firestone). It’s what happens at home and school that make these kids do what they do, so it could be responsible to, take UT 50 percent of the problem by adding anti-bullying programs to enforce school safety. Guns have come up in discussion across all boards of education and have always been turned down, so instead of having teachers armed with weapons why not let them have something to defend against them, Bulletproof Whiteboards.
At a small central Minnesota Rococo School District, this will spend upwards of $25,000 for the protective devices produced by a company better known for its military armor products. School budgets are far tighter now than in recent years with little for training and spending on the boards. The white boards are designed to be held by handles rather than attached to the wall so they can be wielded like shields in the event of a school shooting (Holland). With these plans and past events comes the time to change the future.
Preparing for future school shooting is the only way to have a shot at stopping them. Training our first responders has got to be one of our top goals to achieve if they don’t know exactly the best method of operation there’s always room for improvement. Many schools and public safety officials are receiving inquiries about their schools security and how trained they are during a crisis. Law enforcement all across the United States have been working very hard having more and more training times for these shooting (Connelly).
Most departments including Northern Michigan Leland County, work on Lockwood drills to practice respond timings and get the teachers ready for when the times come to be more readily prepared. The latest thought on reduction of problems preparedness and training of the guards and police officers that respond to the crisis. Now that schools are starting to get an idea of the steps needed to create a safe environment, the parents and guardians need to realize and e informed of all of what’s being worked on to protect there children (Connelly).
